5/1/13 Prompt

The issues in Mary Shelley's novel are relevant to science and our society today.  Dr. Victor Frankenstein wanted the power to create life--to "play God"--but he realizes the mistake he has made once it is too late to do anything about it.

How is this relevant to modern science?  Consider controversial issues such as cloning and stem-cell research.  To what extent do you believe man should pursue knowledge that could lead to creating life? Extend your knowledge base by checking out this American News article titled "Stem Cell Research Far From Frankenstein." Defend your opinion with statistics and facts. Evaluate your peers' opinions by responding to at least one other person's post!

  1. to what extent do i believe man should persue knowledge that could lead to creating life? i believe that man shouldnt create life besides a man and a woman coming together and making a baby. cloning shouldnt be allowed. i think that should be illegal. I do suggest that we should use the deceased organs for the living that needs. I say that becasue the dead isnt using it for anything and has any use for it so why not give it to somebody that needs it to help them carry on with thier life? but i do think the family of the deceased should be asked permission before they do take it. -nadia evans

    1. I agree that we should use other peoples body parts, but I don't think that we should clone them to use them. I think that we could give body parts if it's going to work. Just clones don't seem right.

  2. i think it is ok becuase the sicentific research can be used to help find cures with people with illness.

  3. This is relatable for these years because we always want to be in charge in my opinion. We try to create something bigger and better. With the stem cell research trying to recreate a person, but a modified person. It's kind of strange. I think that if we get used to cloning, and modifying people that we won't know what we really are. It's kind of like evolution that we created. I think that we shouldn't go as far as we could because there are so many dangers that could come from it, what if it turns for the worst, kind of like Frankenstein? I don't believe in using another person’s body for our own use. I know finding a cloan for someone that has passed, sounds good for now, but I feel that their personalities wouldn’t be the same. So what would be the point?

    3. It is ture it is like people are playing god but the through the use of cloning things that people need can be created like a new liver or another organ it might seem bad. But through the right hands in scientific it will go as delicatly as can be there proboly wont be as severe as cloning a whole person becuase it just isnt particulary right in the way of things. People will never go for whole cloning but for minor things tihngs they will agree.

    4. I agree with you. I think that people can still donate their organs to the people that need them once they die. Science isn't the answer for everything. You can still save lives and cure illnesses without creating new life for our own use. This is something that, if people get use to it, could be extremely dangerous.

      Delete
    5. I agree, nobody should be able to clone someone else or use things like that for ridiculous reasons.

  4. Some people believe that in using stem cells, we are "playing God" in that we are using life to create parts for our personal gain. But just as the article above said, is it much different from using the parts from dead, fully developed humans to save lives? Regardless of the origins of the parts, people will be saved using science. If transplants from other sources can be considered wrong too, then that is perfectly fine, no more hypocrisy. But just remember everyone you have ever known that needed a part to survive, regardless of whether or not they got it.

  5. I believe that it is dangerous to clone animals, people, or anything else with life at all. There could always be a glitch in the cloning process and you may end up with something horrible by playing around with something this big. Especially cloning animals, how are we supposed to eat or use anything off of a man made animal when we dont know the exact process or if anything messed up we could end up poisoned or something wrong with the humans and livestock also.

    1. True but indefiantly we wouldnt let the man made things mix with the life stock becuase like you said it could be bad for us. But as an theorist cloning animals wouldnt be bad to see science throught to the end. They would never intoduce c animals into live stock in a mass number.

      Delete
    2. Well scientists are still researching the cloning process, and they wouldn't allow people to eat the meat of a cloned animal unless they were absolutely sure that it was completely safe for consumption. On the other hand, plenty of our food is processed in big factories, and every once in awhile something goes wrong and the food is recalled, and the same thing could happen with cloned animals, but it would be just the same as when your can of peas gets recalled, or if your oatmeal creme pies had a roach in it.

  6. I do not agree with this at all. Doctors need to use the organs from people who have died instead of trying to make it themslelves. Cloning in general isn't something that I would agree with. That is creating life that only God is supposed to be able to do inside a female animal or person, not in a bowl. If one of my family members was dying and needed a kidney to survive, i would give them one of my kidneys before letting a doctor take brain stem cells to create a new kidney that their body might reject. I know that their body might reject my kidney to but i would rather them reject my kidney than something a doctor made from stem cells.

    1. Using stem cells, scientists can craft a body part that is perfectly designed to fit someone's body, and will not be rejected. Stem cells are a blank slate, that can be used to make a perfect organ for any person. It isn't creating new life, it's saving an older one.

      Delete
    2. Still the idea of creating something new doesn't sit well in my stomach. Science isn't always the answer.

      Delete
    3. I understand the reasoning that scientists have behind cloning but it isn't natural.

      Delete
    4. i totally agree with what Rome said, because that is true "That is creating life that only God is supposed to be able to do inside a female animal or person, not in a bowl." Only a man and woman can create life.

      Delete
  7. I feel like it is not okay for somebody to try and create life like that. The way life should be created is between two human beings. This to me is extremey ridiculous. And using parts for those kind of reasons should be illegal. Human parts should only be used for positive reasons like SAVING SOMEONES LIFE.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I dont think cloning people should be allowed or legal. How would you feel to have somebody look exactly like you? But people should be able to use other people's organs ONLY if thier are other people that are really in need of it or otherwise they could die. But they shouldnt be able to just take organs from people without confirming it with thier family first. That would be wrong. - Angel Thompson

  9. I dont think man can create it. Nobody else can "play god" so you cant be able to create life. I somewhat find it weird how they would use things from a dead body. Other people use things from dead people to save lives and also because someone else might need it. I honestly dont like the fact that they try to make it seem like giving a transplant is the same as creating someone yourself because it isnt. When someone needs a transplant its to help or save them not for fun. I dont think cloning people is a good idea because many things could go wrong. When you are thinking for the moment you might feel like its good but later on they will realize that there is nothing good about it.

    1. i agree because in the process of cloning somebody you could overdo something and create something major. if you clone somebody or something they might not be the same some things might be missing or they might have too much of something.

      Delete
  10. i disagree with the whole thing. no man should be able to clone anything because who knows what could happen in the process. As others who have commented said i think that doctors should just use organs from deceased humans, that would be better than actually trying to clone and it really would be harmless because the person's organs that youre using would already be dead. In the process of using a deceased person's organs i also think doctors should have to have permission from that person's immediate family.

  11. I personally don't have an issue with the current research being conducted dealing with stem-cell cloning for medical purposes. I support the idea that they can help generate cells to help people who are sick or severely wounded. Also, I do believe that there are certain boundaries that shouldn't be crossed. As with everything, I do believe that it can be taken too far. Modern science today is advancing at a somewhat unnervingly fast rate for some people, and unfortunately it is well known that many, like Dr. Victor Frakenstein, wish to control something that may lead to adverse reactions far worse than they contemplated.

  12. i agree and disagree, i would like to have another life but i dont want to be cloned. I think we should use dead people organs to the ones who are need for them. I approve of getting permission from the dead peoples families before the transplant. But something dangerous could happen during the process of this and it could all go wrong.

  13. Im thinking cloning can be a good way to use so they can get organs becuase people most times dont want to give up anything even when they pass on> By cloning they can make an exact copy of the organ before it was injured or sick through this it is good. The use of saying man is playing god for all you think may god is working through some indiviaul people not standing to bring in religon into this just a statment.

  14. I dont have a problem with Stem cell research and tests. I do think that we would go to far with this but if it is just for medical and other helpful purposes, I dont have a problem with it. It could save people's lives. I dont think that we should clone people because that would be kind of scary having somebody that looked just like you walking around. All in all I dont really have a problem with it as long as it doesnt go to far.

    3. I view clones as a twin, but late. Twins, in fact, have hte EXACT same DNA as you. Physically, they are the exact same, genetically, they are the same. Only reason one twin may be stronger, or one twin smarter, etc, is because of their upbringing. Nobody can ever be in the exact same situation twice. And let's look at gay marriage. Let's say 2 gay men/women don't want to adopt, they want a child that is compromised of their DNA. You use the dna of both of them, through complicated processes make the child, and let's say have a woman carry it, or some machine. Then it is like they had a child, that is a mix of them, and who they can connect with and love as their own, truly, because it IS their own. I have no problem with cloning or stem cells or anything. But, you are of course entitled to your opinion, I just wanted to give my 2 cents on it.

  15. the idea of cloning something is a cool thing. It can help a lot of people in different situations. My issue with stem cell research is that some people will take it too far and try to clone a person. If the cloning could be held to just body parts and not a whole human I would be cool with that.

  16. I can go either way with this topic. On the one hand I think modern science is a good thing to pursue. I think its a good thing to want to figure out ways to cure some of life's greatest diseases and some of the world's problems. Why wouldn't we want to do that? On the other hand, as human beings we already depend on getting things enough. So for example, stem cells. If we start using those to research and cure disabilities, how heavily are we to rely on them? In all reality, if we start depending on them, what if that resource should start depleting for some reason? How far would we go to gain that resource back? When you also bring the topic of religion into it, that changes the entire thing around completly. Religions have straight rules that could be interepted either way depending on the person, and that may stop some people from getting involved with things that are "playing God." If those who don't interepet as strictly get involved they might see a way to get past some things through loopholes. It can go either way depending on what kind of person you are.

    3. You can not legally bring religion into this. There is a reason for seperation of church and state. The boundaries of science can not be controlled by "I'm a Christian/Muslim/Jew/Catholic and I am disturbed by it so it should be illegal." No, you can't, because as I said, the law and religion are SEPERATE.

On the resources, I have to agree. However, can't we say the same about fossil fuels? About the thing that compromises 75% of our body; water? As humans, we waste and waste and waste, and if we want to stop wasting "A" (in this case, resources required for stem cells), then we also need to stop wasting "B", "C", "D", etc.

      Delete
    4. although there is "seperation of church and state" we dont really follow it. the president is still sworn in on a bible and religion is a major part of our country. and if the scientists who are supposed to be conducting the research have a problem with it based on their religion, then you really have a problem.

  18. I honestly see nothing wrong with embryonic stem cell research mostly because it's not like there is any human being harmedduring the research. I believe there are more benefits than any actual harm that can come from this. The only moral issue I can probably think about is what is considered a living human being. Because embryo's and stem cells are technically living organisms for the human race. But I think that the only think that may not be harmed for science is anything with a living conscious. So stem cell research is fine by me because there really isn't any conscious organism in harms way.

    2. Don't you think it is wrong to create a whole person just so they can have their organs taken out. Not because they are actutally wanted as a person. I would feel awful if I was just created, so I could give someone else my organs. Stem cell research though doesn't create a whole person. It creates just the organ needed.

  20. I think that stem cell research is truly a wonderful thing indeed. It has saved lives, helped people with physical diseases, and also is extremely safe. The way we use stem cells now are to fix things, but like people ask, what if we take it too far? What if we “play God”? Well, in response to this, I say that the notion that we shouldn’t is rubbish. HOWEVER, I say we use it first to help those who NEED it, before we start making self-conscious blobs of biomass. We can help millions of people with this research, so why shouldn’t we promote cloning and stem cell research? If someone lost a kidney, or their liver, or whatever, why not clone a new one, put it in, and then all of a sudden they are healthy, safe, and there is no need for a donor. No need to look for a match. Science can, and will, save the world. Now, I know you must be wondering, “What happens when we create a modern Frankenstein?” Well, first off, I doubt we would give it super-human strength. Second, I doubt it would be anywhere close to the general public. Third, it would be HEAVILY guarded if they were doing those types of experiments. It costs so much time, money, and resources to create something on that scale. Assuming the worst happens, it will escape, the government will contain it, no harm done. And how would it survive anyways? It doesn’t know anything, it doesn’t know not to cross the street when a car comes, it doesn’t know to run from a wolf, or anything.

To paraphrase, cloning and stem cells are a miracle, should be fully supported, and realistically aren’t dangerous in any way.

  21. I do not see anything wrong with embryonic stem cell research. So many people wait every day for an organ transplant and many don’t get it. Embryonic stem cells can make a difference without doing harm. An embryo does not have human characteristics or a conscience yet so I believe it is okay. I believe cloning is unethical though. Making a clone that has a conscience and brain and then just using it for its organs is just wrong. That would be an awful feeling knowing you are only alive to get your organs taken out and given to someone else. It is selfish and unethical.

  23. I don't think man should make man. I dont think we should create humans to live just to give their life to another. However, I dont have a problem with useing stem cells from deceased humans to help living humans overcome disease and disability. I honestly dont know how I fell about the embryonic research. 24. i think the Stem Cell research is a great thing, but could also get out of control if in the wrong hands. I mean it has saved people and helped cancer patiences. Personally i think its pretty cool you can colone something. And its a safe way to do it which is a plus. If we can help people and save lives by coloning something they need like a liver or kidney, why not push forward with this? I believe we should it can help millions of people. If it comes to a point where people are all getting fake because they want something from the stem cells instead of needing it. Thats when it should stop.So overall i think it could be something amazing if it doesnt get out of hand.

  28. I believe that stem cell research is opening up a lot of doors for healing and is taking us to another level of science. Too many people suffer from failing organs and damaged body parts and the human society has come so far with science; we need to use it. We shouldn’t always do something just because we can, but stem-cells will benefit and save millions of lives. About 17 people die every day because they are without an organ transplant. We are not trying to “play God”, we are helping to carry out his work.

    ReplyDelete
  29. This is relatable because we always are trying to improve things in our society. I personally do not have a problem with stem cell research. If this helps people and improves there quality of life I consider it a good thing. The idea of cloning is interesting but might not necessarily be a good thing for society. If cloning helps things then I would think of it as good, but there can always be defects. Like Frankenstein, things could turn out badly, but we don’t know that for sure. There is no way to be absolutely positive about how things will turn out unless we try. If this research affects things in a bad way I would discourage it. Overall, I support organ donation and stem cell research. If this information helps save a life I support it.

Even though cloning is helpful to those in need, it is also not natural to create something that was once not living. Scientist aren’t trying to make something more out of this, they are simply trying to help the one’s who need new organs.
